The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is a missionary and evangelism ministry within the Anglican Communion, named for Andrew, one of Jesus’ twelve original disciples. The Gospel of John teaches that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, whose testimony first led him to follow Jesus (John 1:35-40). Andrew instantly recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and introduced him to Simon Peter without delay (John 1:41). From then on, the two brothers became followers of Christ. Scripture tells us that Jesus called Andrew and his brother Simon Peter, who were fishermen by trade, to be his disciples by saying that He will make them "fishers of men."
Prayer for St. Andrew
(Book of Common Prayer page 185)
Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Andrew, that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him; Give us, who are called by your Holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into his gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.
Following Andrew's example, the first Brothers of St. Andrew reached out to other men, giving them Bibles and inviting them to attend church to hear for themselves the witness of God's love in Jesus Christ.
The Brotherhood of St Andrew was originally established in Chicago in 1883. By the turn
of the 20th century, the ministry flourished with a membership of over 15,000 men and boys in 1000 chapters across seventeen countries. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an Act of the United States Congress that officially incorporated the Brotherhood. This Act states, "the sole object of said corporation shall be the spread of Christ's Kingdom among men."
All members across the globe are united in Christ by observing the Brotherhood disciplines of Prayer, Study and Service.
THE DISCIPLINE OF PRAYER is to pray daily for the spread of Christ's kingdom, especially among men and youth, and for God's blessings upon the labors of the Brotherhood.
THE DISCIPLINE OF STUDY is to study the Holy Scriptures regularly and the
teachings of the Church, to attain a better understanding of how to follow Christ and
bring others into his kingdom.
THE DISCIPLINE OF SERVICE is to make continuous efforts, week by week, to bring others nearer to Christ through his Church.
